Reducing NOx emissions on cruise ships – on the project example of Vasco da Gama
Innovation Hub
Government’s request to reduce emissions of cruise ships in the world heritage fjords Norway tightened the regulations for ship owners. This is one step to protect the stunning visual landscapes in the World Heritage Fjords. All ships entering the fjords must comply with IMO Tier Ill NOx values by 2025 – whether newbuild or not. Without aftertreatment technology the impact on itinerary planning is significant. This ambitious project “Vasco de Gama” was initiated in January, when she was docked at LISNAVE Shipyards in Portugal. The project steps:
- The scanning (full 3D-Scan) of the vessels engine room and funnel enabled an exact fit of the SCR housings. The installation of the catalyst units could be planned and done with as less impact as possible to the existing vessel structure.
- The calculation and validation of the exhaust gas flow and exhaust gas pressures, could be started by means of a CFD-Flow Analysis as well as backpressure and NH3 distribution calculation.
- The installation of the exhaust gas cleaning system could be carried out by an experienced team on site.

Zelim
Introducing ZOE: Using AI to provide highly accurate Person Overboard Detection, Tracking and Alerting
Innovation Hub
Finding a person who has fallen overboard is often a game of luck, at Cruise ship deck level you are trying to spot and keep track of an object no larger than a football from several hundred metres. A person drifts quickly in currents and is often obscured by waves, light glare and sea spray. Imagine trying to spot a person overboard in a storm or at night. The random motion of water, weather and reflected light combine to create a chaotic environment where the human eye and vision systems can become confused, leading to misidentification or worse, failed sightings. Zelim have developed ZOE, an AI enabled PoB detection solution which brings order to the chaos, detecting, alerting and tracking PoB’s in daylight, night time, storm, mist or fog. Developed in collaboration with the US Coastguard, ZOE’s AI models have been built on a dataset of over 4 million labelled maritime rescue images across a wide range of ocean conditions. Powered by this dataset, ZOE provides a greater probability of detection and a consistent level of detection performance, whatever the weather. Hear from Zelim’s CTO, Doug Lothian for an insight into how AI can be used to improve the chances of finding and tracking people who unfortunately end up overboard. Doug will also reveal how the technology could be expanded to support other detection needs of the Cruise Industry, such as marine mammal monitoring.

Wärtsilä
Innovation – A never-ending process
Innovation Hub
The session will begin by examining how market requirements, including accelerated decarbonisation targets, are driving the need for innovation in the maritime industry. It will discuss fuel cost developments due to emissions-related fees and highlight that these changes will happen within a single vessel’s lifespan. It will continue by emphasising the importance of fuel flexibility to avoid stranded assets, and then lay out a fuel roadmap through transition fuels towards green zero-carbon fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. We will then move on to examine how Wartsila has invested both internally and externally to deliver leading technological innovations that will enable a fast-track to profitable decarbonisation for cruise vessel owners and operators. The session concludes with a look at Wärtsilä’s multi-fuel engine innovations – including concepts for ICE operation on ammonia, methanol and hydrogen – and how they offer a viable upgrade path and certainty in the transition to green fuels for today, 2050 and beyond. Outcomes: 1. How accelerated decarbonisation targets and developments in future fuels are shaping the shipping industry. 2. The role of R&D in enabling the cruise industry to transition to more sustainable operations. 3. How Wärtsilä’s multi-fuel engine technology brings certainty in the future-fuel transition and enables a viable path to decarbonisation.

New Nuclear – an alternative pathway for the Shipping Green journey?
Innovation Hub
Nuclear over the next 10 to 15 years is firming up as a way for many ‘hard to abate’ industries, including maritime, to emancipate themselves from fossil fuels. The next generation of reactors have the promise of truly making nuclear an available technology. Lloyd’s Register’s believes they represent a significant opportunity for the world’s energy transition. The two most promising technologies are the Small Modular and the Molten Salt reactors, that unlike their predecessors employ passive safety systems and offer a compact, but efficient form of propulsion. There is a risk that there will not be enough alternative fuels to go around, at least in the medium term (2035-40). In many ways you could say that nuclear will enable a more equitable low-carbon future. Lloyd’s Register is actively supporting clients considering the deployment of nuclear technology for floating nuclear power, offshore applications and shipping.

The Power of 3 Commitment and Horizons in a commoditized world
Innovation Hub
With the Global Cruise Industry now running at full speed (again) and the major Ship-Yards being fully booked, both with new build – as well as Retrofit Projects – Cruise Lines need to think strategically about their technology landscape (and especially) technology partners moving forward. Already a vast majority of both the Electrical, as well as IT landscape on board a Cruise Vessel, consists of products which are (highly) commoditized, this resulting in a price-competition, which (initially) seems good for the Cruise Investment Community. In parallel, on the Vendor-side, not only massive consolidation is taking place – resulting in even fewer vendors “willing and able” to work with the Global Cruise Industry – some Technology Vendors have changed their commercial model, which does not fit the Cruise Industry at all ! What is the result of all of this: • Fewer Technology Partners who are willing and able to serve the Global Cruise Industry • Financial in-stabilities with some of the Technology Vendors • Cruise-Lines therefore need to think strategically with whom they want to partner, for how long, and at what price Outcomes • Think before you buy • Choose – also for commoditized products – your Technology partners, both from a Strategic Perspective (fit / Tech landscape) as well as Horizon (> 10 / 15 years) • In other words – choose wisely
